Strength Development Characteristics of Polyurea

Spray-applied polyurea is widely known for its rapid curing, with a gel time ranging from just a few seconds to a dozen seconds. It can reach walk-on strength within two minutes of application. However, although the reaction time of polyurea is measured in seconds, a tack-free surface does not necessarily indicate that its mechanical strength has fully developed.

Typically, polyurea requires a curing period of 5–7 days at around 25°C to reach its optimal strength after application. This duration may vary depending on environmental temperatures. As such, attention must be paid to post-application curing during construction or spraying processes.

For instance, in flooring applications, while the surface may become walkable within minutes, it’s advisable to wear flat-soled shoes. Heavy objects should not be placed on the surface, and it’s important to avoid stepping on flexible or uneven areas (such as joints between corrugated steel sheets), as the polyurea’s strength won’t have fully developed, leaving it relatively vulnerable to deformation and impact.

As the saying goes, “One part polyurea, nine parts application.” A thorough understanding of the material’s properties, combined with close attention to application details, is essential for ensuring project quality and delivering high-performance polyurea systems.
