The Importance of Putty in Substrate Preparation

One of the advantages of spray-applied polyurea is its fast reaction speed and high construction efficiency. However, this also brings a drawback: when the substrate has pores, the air inside cannot be released in time, which may result in pinholes or similar defects. Therefore, on porous substrates, a layer of putty is often applied. The main function of the putty layer is to seal the defects on the substrate surface, making the sprayed polyurea coating appear smoother and reducing the risk of leakage points.

Common types of putty used with spray polyurea include epoxy putty and polyurethane putty. Putty can be applied by troweling or spraying. Generally, before applying the putty, a compatible primer should be brushed onto the surface. After applying the putty, an intermediate transition coat should be applied to enhance the adhesion between the polyurea and the putty layer. Different substrates require different compatible putties; otherwise, there is a risk that the putty may crack, leading to cracks in the polyurea coating.
