Differences Between Pure Polyurea and Hybrid Polyurea

Many people are aware of the existence of pure polyurea and hybrid (or “semi”) polyurea, but they may not know the specific differences between the two.

From a chemical perspective, pure polyurea is produced by reacting a hydroxyl-terminated compound with an isocyanate to form a semi-prepolymer (A-component), which then reacts with a mixture (B-component) composed of amine-terminated polyether and amine chain extenders.

Polyurethane (urea), commonly referred to as hybrid polyurea, is made by reacting a hydroxyl-terminated compound with an isocyanate to form a semi-prepolymer (A-component), which then reacts with a mixture (B-component) consisting of hydroxyl-terminated polyether (and amine-terminated polyether) and amine chain extenders.

In the reaction products of polyurea, the urea groups form a geometrically symmetrical structure centered on the C=O group, which is more stable than the carbamate groups in polyurethane products. Therefore, in terms of both macroscopic and microscopic properties, as well as environmental stability, polyurea generally

 outperforms polyurethane.

However, pure polyurea also has its limitations. Its formulation adjustment range is relatively narrow, meaning that for certain specialized performance requirements, the raw materials of pure polyurea may be restrictive, and hybrid polyurea or polyurethane may be necessary to achieve the desired properties.

Thus, the choice of polyurea material should be determined based on the actual application requirements and the conditions of the construction site. There is no single material that is universally superior; selecting the most appropriate material after fully understanding the conditions is the key to achieving the best results.
