The Difference Between Aromatic and Aliphatic Polyurea

Spray-applied polyurea can be categorized into aromatic and aliphatic types based on the raw material formulation. Aromatic polyurea primarily uses aromatic raw materials such as MDI, liquid MDI, MOCA, or DETDA. In contrast, aliphatic polyurea is formulated with aliphatic raw materials like HDI, IPDI, or IPDA.

Aromatic polyurea was the first to be developed and commercialized and is still the most widely used type today. Most commonly used polyurea systems for waterproofing, anti-corrosion, abrasion resistance, impact resistance, as well as decorative and even military blast-resistant applications are aromatic-based.

Aromatic polyurea offers excellent mechanical strength, aging resistance, and impact durability, but it has one inherent limitation: it discolors when exposed to light.

On the other hand, aliphatic polyurea maintains excellent stability under UV exposure, making it suitable for applications requiring high color retention and long-term outdoor durability.

Qingdao Polyswell is focusing on the research and development, production and sales of polyurea technology. We will always hold your back. If you have any questions about polyurea technology, please feel free to contact us.
