Do Color-Changing and Non-Color-Changing Polyurea Use Different Pigments?

It’s well known that conventional polyurea tends to turn yellow after long-term exposure to UV light. For customers who have high requirements for appearance, manufacturers usually recommend non-yellowing formulations. But are these two types of polyurea different only because of the pigments used? Actually, that’s not the case.

Color-changing polyurea is typically the aromatic type, which is the most commonly used in the market. The discoloration it undergoes under light exposure is not due to poor light resistance of the pigments, but because the resin itself undergoes chemical reactions when exposed to ultraviolet rays, resulting in yellowing.

In contrast, non-color-changing polyurea is the aliphatic type. The molecular structure of its resin inherently prevents yellowing under UV exposure. That’s why aliphatic polyurea is much more expensive than aromatic polyurea — not because of special pigments, but because the resin components are fundamentally different.
