How Are Smooth and Textured Polyurea Surfaces Created?

When it comes to spray-applied polyurea, you’ll often see two types of surface finishes: a smooth, flat surface and a rough, textured one. These differences are not due to different polyurea formulas, but are actually controlled by the spraying technique.

Polyurea reacts extremely quickly after being sprayed, unlike traditional paints which have a long leveling time. This rapid curing means that achieving a perfectly smooth and glossy surface is quite difficult, especially when spraying large areas or complex shapes.

To create a textured surface, one common technique is to evenly scatter texture particles during or after spraying. Another method is to increase the distance between the spray gun and the substrate. By doing this, the atomized polyurea particles spend more time in the air, and as they fall onto the surface, they form a rough, granular texture.

This control over spray distance and technique gives applicators flexibility to tailor the surface finish to specific functional or aesthetic requirements.

Aromatic polyurea offers excellent mechanical strength, aging resistance, and impact durability, but it has one inherent limitation: it discolors when exposed to light.

On the other hand, aliphatic polyurea maintains excellent stability under UV exposure, making it suitable for applications requiring high color retention and long-term outdoor durability.
